He always remained true to himself: sincere, honest and committed to his values. Jörg was a scientist and biologist with conviction and passion, guided by inexhaustible curiosity. He walked through the world and through nature with his eyes wide open – a scientist with all his heart, a rock star of science and a great, impressive personality that we all miss dearly.

His enormous knowledge earned him the reputation of being the “Yoda of biology” among his friends. Jörg knew everything; he was a walking library. He didn’t just read books – he devoured them. Another great passion was good food. It was almost astonishing that you couldn’t see that with his wiry figure of 1.85 m (6 feet 1) and 82 kg, his brisk, springy gait and his youthful, energetic appearance.

Jörg ate with great pleasure; his portions were legendary, and we often cooked as if we were catering for a large family. Watching him eating was a beautiful sight – full of joie de vivre. For Jörg, nothing was taken for granted. He was a deeply grateful person.

What was striking about Jörg was his bright smile. When he laughed, his whole face beamed; it was a laugh from the bottom of his heart. One could only like him – or perhaps fear his intelligence. However, there was never a reason for this, because he used it exclusively positively, pleasantly and constructively. Jörg beamed from within. I noticed this in all the photos I looked through in the last year: In almost all the photos he smiles.

„The first time I met Joerg at the National Cancer Institute I saw a man with an exuberant smile. Through that smile, Joerg radiated excitement, energy, determination and happiness. To me, Joerg personified joie de vivre. When I think of him, I see that smile. His memory brings a smile to me as well.“ Ernst from Maryland, USA

Jörg always seemed fresh, young, alert, humorous, optimistic and eloquent – and at the same time reserved. His visual trademarks at work were his tangled, gray-shaded hair, checked jackets or dark Zegna suits, when appropriate in combination with colored ties with biological motifs. He pragmatically chose what fitted, served the purpose and was comfortable. Colorful sneakers completed his style; they were his shoes of choice. He looked even more relaxed with colorful or funny T-shirts under his suit. At home, he wore colorful T-shirts and sweaters. A well-groomed, aesthetic and sympathetic appearance was important to him. Aesthetics in general meant a lot to him. His taste was exquisite in every way – as was his natural hair color. His hair looked like fine platinum strands, with a white natural wreath; he used to be blond, with a light blond wreath. Despite his fine skin and his slender face with a few cheerful freckles, he was very masculine: with a high forehead, large hands and feet and steel-gray-blue eyes reminiscent of the North Sea. He liked the North Sea and the Atlantic very much.

“Jörg was a wonderful appearance. I really appreciated his humor. Jörg had the ability to fill a room, to relax people and cheer them up. Jörg was very present.” Rosemarie from Munich

With his razor-sharp mind and his questions, which charmingly, precisely and without personal injury hit the weak points of any project work, Jörg often reminded me of a character like James Bond. In a figurative sense, he was the 007 of infection science and molecular biology. His weapons were his intelligence, his mind, his knowledge – and his molecular biology pipette. Those who presented their work to us had great respect for Jörg’s questions. They hit, politely and elegantly formulated, right in the center. Nothing escaped his quick, sharp mind. However, he was never interested in exposing anyone. In a constructive and pleasant atmosphere, projects were put on solid ground and pushed forward. Jörg was always solution-oriented and, above all, called for discussion. Everyone should actively participate, because this is the only way to make progress. We didn’t have any stupid questions – because there are no stupid questions. Good science is always associated with skill, knowledge and honesty.

Even before SAJO, we were among the “young wilds” of science in the public sector. We initiated a series of seminars for regular data presentations called “The Young Wilds” – for all those who still wanted to achieve something and for all those who had returned to Germany from abroad.

ZEIT Wissen 2009 “Love in the Laboratory – the Committed”

His sovereignty made some competitors outside our institution capitulate. Within the research institution, everyone benefited from us. His quick, razor-sharp mind, his eloquence, his knowledge and, above all, his performance naturally put him in a strong, almost untouchable position. Jörg had charisma – and he accepted the responsibility that came with it. What he achieved exceeded all expectations, every time. Jörg was a top performer who took care of all of his projects and teams. We also always raised the financing – even for our own positions, ourselves. We were one hundred percent financed by our own third-party funds: from the EU, federal and state governments, industry and foundations. That gave us independence. We founded SAJO in order to be able to pursue our scientific goals at a level that seemed appropriate to us. We consistently worked towards these goals.

His interest led him through the science of viruses, starting with retroviruses, then continuing through bacteriology, and towards the end of his life he began to study the literature on parasites. Jörg was a thoroughbred biologist with passion.

His thirst for new knowledge was insatiable – until 2024 when a stroke of fate hit him, inevitably leading to his death. The harshness and cruelty of life struck. At the beginning of 2024, Jörg was diagnosed with a highly aggressive glioblastoma. At that time, he wanted to send me away out of consideration, because he did not want to burden me with his fate. He knew what this diagnosis meant. But how could I leave the love of my life to his fate after 28 years and turn away? That was unthinkable. It was a necessity and a great honor for me to accompany my beloved husband around the clock in the last year of his life, and to take good care of him – just as we had shared our lives with each other in the years before. After the path we had walked together, it was natural for me to walk the last part of our way with him. Jörg would have done the same for me.

We managed to get Jörg through the last year of his life with a relatively good quality of life and dignity. With a disease that progresses so quickly, this is a real challenge. At this point I would like to thank everyone who accompanied and helped us. Without you, I wouldn’t have done it so well. Thank you very much – from the bottom of my heart.

Jörg bore his fate with impressive dignity until the end. He was incredibly brave and courageous. The attitude with which he faced his illness made a deep impression on me – and not only on me. The course of this disease varies greatly from person to person. Jörg became sweeter and sweeter, and above all he didn’t lose his sense of humor. He did not give up until the end. He was a fighter. Giving up was not an option for him. He said to me, “I have to leave you alone now – break – and I’m not done with my work yet.” I replied that I would be fine, that he knew that – and that I would finish his work as we had discussed. I promised him.

I always admired him for the person he was. But since I saw how he accepted his fate – with so much dignity, courage, bravery and poise – I adore him. Jörg was wonderful, all his life. His life’s work will stay with us for many decades to come; likewise, his inventiveness, creativity and personality will remain alive in our memory. Jörg can never be forgotten.

In the end, Jörg did not die due to his glioblastoma, but to the consequences of an intravenously acquired infection. In January 2025, his disease was already in its final stage; at the palliative care unit he was able to receive very good medical and neurological care there. The only consolation for me is that his death was merciful, even if it came somewhat earlier at his bedside. He fell asleep peacefully and left in peace. Hospital-acquired infections, resistant bacteria and poor hygiene – where hygiene is crucial – are quietly and secretly allowing this pandemic to continue. I was deeply shocked by the acceptance of this silent pandemic and the way it is dealt with in many German hospitals.

Jörg had a great personality. He was a scientist of absolute integrity who always remained true to his values. His strong sense of justice was his guiding principle in life. Fairness and reliability were his top priorities.

Jörg faced the competition – one of the toughest in our field – in his own way: by leaving it behind. He left everyone behind. “We have so much knowledge and so many ideas, we always move forward.” He was to be proved right; the gap was getting bigger and bigger. Some owe their careers to him. Jörg had a big heart, full of good-naturedness and generosity. He never harmed anyone. Jörg was brilliant. Jörg was a genius. I have to say that today in retrospect.

He always supported people who asked him for help and support in their time of need – together we have that. He never turned anyone away. So, it came about that we gave some people scientific advice about their serious cancer. We shared our knowledge so that seriously ill people could gain quality of life and life expectancy. We made sure that these people were well cared for by suitable specialists.

“You were always there when you were needed. Your willingness to help and your kind heart will stay with us forever.” Christian and his son Andreas from Herzogenaurach

The interaction of different pathogens with the immune system fascinated Jörg. He researched zoonoses and species barriers. If such barriers are overcome, epidemics and pandemics can follow. These pathogens originate from the animal kingdom and push into new host organisms. Virus-host interactions and defense mechanisms fascinated him. We were also both busy working on different routes of infection. For decades, we worked together at the molecular and cell biological level, developing numerous techniques and biological systems – far beyond the well-known state of the art and cutting edge of science. Pushing science forward was our motto. This topic is far-reaching, in the middle of immunology and evolutionary biology. In other words, there is hardly anything more exciting. We were captivated by it. Jörg was the king of molecular biology. I have never experienced a more talented molecular biologist in this discipline – combined with great dedication and deep passion. Despite all his other tasks, he always chose to continue working in the laboratory himself. He lived science with every fiber, and it filled his life with countless hours. It was his passion for life.

“I will always remember Jörg as a young and talented scientist with remarkable potential, who was distinguished not only by his passion and fantastic humor, but also by the deep love for science he shared with his wife Sabine Breun. Their exemplary dedication to science throughout their lives – and beyond — remains truly inspiring.” Delphine from France

His science operates at the highest international level.

An ingenious invention was in 2007 at our kitchen table in the evening, after the discovery of regulatory T cells in 2005 by Shimon Sakaguchi. Our invention was about how to reprogram incorrectly activated T cells of the immune system into regulatory T cells that bring the immune system back into balance. Regulatory T cells are a very small subpopulation of T cells, the effector cells of the immune system serving the defense. Through our invention, we can specifically prevent transplanted tissue and organs, or autologous tissue in autoimmune diseases, from being falsely attacked. This invention can also be used for severe allergies, wherever T cells are incorrectly programmed. We reprogram them in a targeted manner. This invention was ingenious. Sakaguchi received the Nobel Prize in 2025 for his discovery. Unfortunately, Jörg did not live to see that. He would have been very happy, he would have been “over the moon with joy”, just as he was when Ralph Steinman’s discovery of dendritic cells was awarded the Nobel Prize very late, in 2011. Ralph Steinman died of his illness shortly beforehand. We knew him personally, because our work fascinated him. We also work with dendritic cells, on the mechanism of pathogen transmission. We work with all immune cells, modify them, and reprogram them. We call this immunomodulation. The immune system is highly exciting and will continue to occupy us, especially in interaction with pathogens. Special mechanisms or enzymes, such as the reverse transcription of HIV, the discovery of HIV itself, have been awarded with Nobel Prizes. We had the great pleasure to work with brilliant colleagues.

In recent years, our most important invention has been the SAJO technology – an interdisciplinary technology, far ahead of its time and intellectually at the highest level. It enables us to find and isolate new highly active agents against pathogens and against pathogen X (the one that will trigger the next pandemic). This opens up new possibilities in the fight against infectious diseases, viruses and bacteria. It is a game changer in the preparation for the next pandemic, for the black swan of evolutionary biology: for the treatment of infections, for prophylaxis and as an alternative to the few vaccination options available.

At the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic in 2020, we covered the helplessness in Germany, in Europe and worldwide with our SAJO blog, which is still very well received today. We shared our knowledge in dealing with highly contagious pathogens. We transferred our experience in infection control from the safety laboratory into everyday life, adding Jörg’s knowledge of epidemiology and our knowledge of psychology. We tried to write our posts with wit and entertainment so that everyone had the opportunity to get through this heavy pandemic wave well – and, if possible, not to fall ill with COVID. Because we knew that we owed our knowledge to our talents, hard work and a long way – and that only few reach such a level. Our blog served as orientation for many others who had to expose themselves in the media. Everyone was helpless and defenseless at the mercy of the pandemic. This is shown to this day by the millions of deaths and the numerous post-illness conditions. The damage is enormous, and this virus remains dangerous today.

In this way, we gave something back to society, because we were lucky enough to be able to study free of charge. Jörg and I were children who benefited from the educational opportunities in Germany in the 1970s until the end of the millennium. We hope that the next generations will also receive these opportunities and be able to develop into outstanding personalities. People like Jörg carry our society. They have the ability to solve the complex challenges of our time intellectually. Such people are rare. They have a great gift that requires education, time, space and fertile soil to be able to develop – because it is always a creative process. Jörg was such a personality – a real role model for all of us.

“Today marks the first anniversary of his death. As a coach, he accompanied me on my way to the scholarship with great expectation, trust and heart – I will always be grateful to him for that.” Lisa from Lahr, Black Forest

Jörg had many interests; his curiosity and thirst for knowledge were insatiable. I describe his interests and our science in more detail in my book that I am currently writing.

Here is just a short list of his interests, listed briefly here: science, science, science; genetics and molecular biology; immunology; viruses, bacteria, parasites; evolutionary biology; SAJO; Germany’s history; reading and music across the board – pop, rock, classical, jazz and blues, no rap, no German Schlager music; my music on the piano; our garden; birds; nature reserves; ecology; agriculture; hiking; international cuisine; different cultures; discussions and joint activities; concert and cultural visits; movies; sunsets in the garden; formerly Taekwondo, black belt; cycling, swimming, beach volleyball and bagpipe music in primary school.

His favorite places were his laboratory, our garden, List on Sylt, Munich, Long Island / Cold Spring Harbor – and everywhere I was or his or our friends were. The African continent made a deep impression on him. Jörg felt at home where I was – and this feeling was mutual.

Jörg was a person with whom you got along well. He was very pleasant, despite his strength, and always attentive.

“We remember Jörg in that he loved children and calmly and kindly allowed them to take on responsibility. Our children were able to notice this because he not only gave them the “holy and dangerous” lawnmower – with appropriate precautions – but also always explained a lot about the world, scientifically, politically and simply humanly.” Andrea & Bernd – the neighbours

Jörg’s humor and witty verbal style were legendary. He had a sense of humor for every situation; he had the gift of cheering up a room, a discussion group with his sympathetic, considerate manner and his charisma, filling it with a good atmosphere. This is a great talent that many remember. Jörg lit up every room and filled it with positive energy. So everyone could feel comfortable. It was always pleasant and very entertaining with him. At meetings, our table got bigger and bigger; more and more people joined us, because we laughed a lot. Around Jörg there was always a good mood, which was contagious.

“Jörg will always be remembered, not only as an honest and dedicated scientist, whose commitment to research was unwavering, but also as a good friend. His dry “Swabian Humor” tinged with sarcasm and wit, always entertained and his love for AC/DC and VfB Stuttgart were never too far from conversation. He is sorely missed and was taken from us far too soon.” Dave & Ferda from Cambridge, UK

Both community and solitude were important to him: – for thinking, research and writing. He once said about himself: “I can do both, I am like a wolf.”

Jörg’s scientific writing style was reminiscent of that of Ernest Hemingway: to the point, not a word too many, with the highest density of scientific information.

His path, which started in Stuttgart on May 24, 1966, led him to Munich during elementary school, then to the Karlsgymnasium (high school), to biology studies and a PhD at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), GSF – now the Helmholtz Society – and to Vienna. As a scientist, he worked across Europe, then in the United States on both the east and west coasts, in 2000 with a competitive NIH scholarship in Maryland, where we lived for several years for research at the NIH/National Cancer Institute, later to Canada, Switzerland and Ethiopia. He was an invited speaker everywhere. Our work has been awarded without exception in the US, even by two Nobel laureates. We were very honored by that. In recent years up to now, SAJO has also been awarded several times a year. We thank you for this recognition, which has meant a lot to us – because we have gone our way without support. It was a long way, and it was our way.

Jörg and I founded SAJO together to lift our science to the level we wanted to achieve – for progress and to be able to offer our results and products in the fight against infectious diseases to humanity. SAJO is the culmination of our scientific achievement.

Jörg’s interests and activities were versatile. He took on responsibility in society. He was one of the few who had the courage to stand up against extremism and, especially, right-wing extremism – against the indifference that has spread and taken hold in society like a pandemic. We are dedicated democrats and we stand for a peaceful, united, strong and transparent Europe with democratic, European and social values. This is for the good of all and serves everyone. Freedom of speech, freedom, the rule of law, protection of the environment, protection of personal data and fair economic competition are a high good that we do not want to lose. That distinguishes Europe from other countries and makes our continent worth living in. We believe in the potential of a united Europe. Jörg showed attitude – and the right one in every situation. He was a courageous personality of a greatness such as I have rarely seen, and he was a dedicated democrat and a commited pacifist.

He was also committed to our environment – to our Earth, the basis of all life, our prosperity and our economy. In this regard, his confidence and otherwise unshakable optimism left him. Climate change, which is in full swing and linked to a point of no return, will change our Earth and make it uninhabitable for us humans. “What is certain is that our planet will continue to exist without humanity.” In his opinion, two things have prevailed: Independent, very good science is losing acceptance – you can see this in the US – and political networks and the economy are not creating framework conditions that enable every individual to effectively counter climate change. The population was always well advised to orient themselves to independent scientific knowledge and progress. This has enabled us to have a good quality of life. Many have left this path, because it is more convenient to orient oneself backwards and let the system continue to be corrupted. People tend to be lazy. That’s why Jörg didn’t believe in swarm intelligence in humans.

It is usually only a few intelligent individuals who can trigger course corrections – and these usually have no influence. Until it reaches the majority of people, it is a race against time that we will lose or have already lost for our Earth. His call to the world was to consider carefully about who to vote for and to whom to give this power, to honestly represent the interests of the people and to guide the populations into a future worth living.

Love of my Life – it is time to say goodbye

My husband was wonderful. He carried me on his hands every day. We met in a laboratory in Vienna. At that time, I implemented one of his ideas as part of an internship at the LMU. Before we got together, our colleagues saw that we were a good match. We only realized this ourselves after several months – after completing our project work. A relationship at the workplace was against our principles. Our cooperation and our meeting at that time lasted for another 28 years – until his death.

We were united by our hearts, by our passion for our science, and by shared values. We learned from each other and were able to share all our interests with each other. From then on, our paths ran parallel. Our partnership was characterized by unconditional love, mutual respect, mutual appreciation, honesty, sincerity and lived equality. We complemented each other exceptionally well; as a team, we were unbeatable.

In 2002, after five years of partnership, we got married during our research stay in the US on Kauai, the Garden Island of Hawaii.
