The Fight against Pathogen X
With groundbreaking innovations, the research-driven company SAJO works to prepare humanity for pandemics and to defeat infectious diseases.
In the animal kingdom, numerous pathogens exist with the potential to cross the species barrier. The WHO has given this threat the name Pathogen X—triggered by an as-yet-unknown pathogen X, whose dangerous potential is not yet known today.

Carrying the life’s work forward
The company was founded by the scientists Dr. Sabine Breun and Dr. Jörg Baumann (1966 to 2025). The renowned scientific couple worked side by side, hand in hand, internationally for 30 years and went together a path that culminated in SAJO as the pinnacle of their inventions.
After the death of her husband, Dr. Sabine Breun continues SAJO into the future with her comprehensive knowledge and specialization in infectious diseases. The scientist has received international recognition several times. Like Dr. Baumann, she has decades of experience in researching viruses and their interaction with the immune system.
Due to its achievements, SAJO has already received several prestigious recognitions, including the Berlin Business Award 2022, the Global Award 2023/24, and the Global Health & Pharma Award 2023 and 2024. The following year, the company was named “Service Champion” by the German Institute for Service Quality (DISQ); in 2026 SAJO was honored as a “Business Innovator” by diind and the DUP magazine, please see below.
Dr. Sabine Breun herself also received special recognition: In 2025, the DUP magazine honored her as a “role model and entrepreneur of German mid-sized companies,” while the German Institute for Innovation (diind) awarded her the title “Entrepreneur of the Future.” At that time, Dr. Baumann passed away; he was very pleased by this special recognition. “

In memoriam Dr. Jörg Baumann; Jörg has performed all previous scientific work in basic research on zoonoses for SAJO. For me, it was an extraordinary experience to work with such a great man and scientist. I enjoyed working and living with him so much. It was the greatest honor for me in life, being with him for so many years.
SAJO is the future! I’m grateful to everyone who stands by me, supports me, and works with me—many of you currently on a voluntary basis. It means a lot to me. These awards are for all of you—for a bright future together!
Dr. Sabine Breun and Dr. Joerg Baumann, both Ph.D.s, virologists, immunologists, molecular biologists and founders of SAJO. Both are specialized in infectious diseases. Since the 90s, Dr. Baumann was working on zoonoses and how pathogens overcome the species barrier. Since 2000, Dr. Breun works on the interaction of viruses with the immune system. Both work as team. SAJO enables new antivirals – antivirals of the next generation to fight pandemics.
During their scientific carreers, both performed scientific work for 5 years at the National Cancer Institute in an US elite program on competitive US scholarships. Dr. Baumann passed away on January 28, 2025, after a year of heaviest illness. Here at the SAJO Blog, you may find his obituaries. He was a great man und extraordinary scientist – “in transit” – he said.
